NASA’s TOMEX+ Mission to Investigate Atmospheric Turbulence with Sounding Rockets

August 16, 2025
in Space Technology

NASA’s TOMEX+ mission aims to delve into the mysteries of atmospheric turbulence using sounding rockets. This project will explore the less understood, chaotic phenomenon occurring near the edge of space, which can have significant effects on radio wave propagation and satellite orbits.

Atmospheric turbulence is a complex dynamic process, and TOMEX+ seeks to enhance our understanding by targeting higher altitudes that are difficult to study with conventional methods. The mission will employ a series of sounding rockets equipped with scientific instruments to collect data on this elusive turbulence phenomenon.

The goals of the TOMEX+ mission include:

  • Measuring temperature, wind, and other variables at high altitudes.
  • Understanding how turbulence affects satellite communications and GPS systems.
  • Improving models for better weather prediction and satellite design.

Through such missions, NASA aims to develop a more comprehensive understanding of atmospheric processes that impact our modern technological infrastructure. The data collected will provide invaluable insights into the dynamics at the boundary between atmosphere and space.
