ESA opens applications for 2026 student internships: how to apply and key dates

November 3, 2025
in Civil

European Space Agency (ESA) has opened applications for its 2026 Student Internship Programme, inviting university students across engineering, science, IT, business, economics and social sciences to apply by 30 November 2025. The initiative offers placements across ESA directorates and sites, providing practical experience within Europe’s institutional space sector. Full details are published on ESA’s careers portal.

How to apply

ESA is listing individual internship roles on its recruitment website. Candidates should review the descriptions and submit materials tailored to their chosen roles. The agency advises selecting opportunities that align with academic training and career goals.

  1. Create a candidate profile on ESA’s recruitment website.
  2. Upload a current CV.
  3. Add a concise motivation letter focused on fit and objectives.
  4. Submit the application by 30 November 2025.

Browse and apply via the official announcement: ESA Student Internships 2026.

Eligibility

  • University student, ideally in the final or penultimate year of a master’s programme.
  • Citizen of an ESA Member State or Cooperating State (as listed on ESA vacancy pages).
  • Enrolled at a university for the full duration of the internship.

Timeline

  • November 2025: Internship opportunities published.
  • December 2025 – January 2026: Shortlisting and selection.
  • From February 2026: Internships begin; start dates are agreed with the assigned ESA tutor.

Programme details

ESA internships typically run for 3–6 months and are intended to complement academic training with hands-on assignments. Positions span technical, scientific and business-oriented domains, with exposure to ongoing ESA missions, programmes and support functions.

What participants can expect

  • Hands-on learning at ESA facilities and access to subject-matter experts.
  • Opportunities to conduct research that may contribute to academic theses.
  • Networking with peers and staff within an international work environment.

Application tips

  • Select up to two internships that closely match your studies and interests.
  • Present clear, relevant motivation aligned to the role requirements.
  • Provide thoughtful responses that outline academic background and focus areas.
  • Avoid last-minute submission; applications can be updated until vacancies close.

Why it matters

The programme offers a structured entry point into Europe’s space industry, helping students develop practical skills and professional networks aligned with current mission needs. With roles across engineering disciplines, Earth observation, satellite operations, data analysis, software, product assurance, and business support, the internships provide exposure to operational environments and real project constraints.

Interested students should review role-specific eligibility and requirements on ESA’s recruitment platform and complete submissions before the stated deadline. For official information and updates, consult the announcement on ESA’s website: ESA Student Internships 2026.
